How to crochet a simple Granny Sqaure

January 11, 2024 by Robin Schmeltzle

What is a granny square?

A granny square comprises basic crochet stitches, like the double crochet stitch. You can make the squares with either a single color of yarn or changing colors every round. Many granny squares are great for beginner crochet patterns because they’re easy to crank out

There are hundreds of granny square variations with the most popular being the classic granny square, solid granny square, and sunburst granny square. You can find step-by-step written tutorials or videos for all the variations of granny squares.

The squares’ difficulty ranges from absolute beginners to intermediate but once you get the hang of it, they’re so easy to make.

Materials

To make granny squares you will need

  • a crochet hook
  • yarn needle
